Over the past few weeks, we have been busy completing exciting project work all about County Galway. We researched and wrote about many different aspects of Galway’s history, culture, geography, traditions, and famous landmarks. Each pupil chose an area of interest to investigate and present to the class.
Some of the fascinating topics we explored included the famous Claddagh Ring, the beautiful region of Connemara, and the well-known Connemara Pony. We also learned about the traditional Galway Hooker and currachs, which have played an important role in Irish coastal life for generations.
Many pupils researched Galway’s famous festivals, including the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, the Galway International Arts Festival, and the world-famous Galway Races. Others explored famous people from Galway and important landmarks such as the Spanish Arch.
We also investigated Galway’s natural beauty, including its rivers, mountains, lakes, and the magnificent Twelve Bens mountain range. Topics such as weather, traditions, towns, the Gaeltacht, and places including Craughwell and Clifden were also researched in great detail.
Another interesting topic was the story of Alcock and Brown and their historic transatlantic flight, which is closely linked to Galway.
Through this project work, we developed our research, writing, and presentation skills while learning more about the rich heritage and culture of Galway. We are extremely proud of all the effort and creativity that went into our projects, and we enjoyed sharing our work with each other. Please see some of our wonderful projects below!
